The Svivlo Draken 1

The Svivlo Draken 1 might just be the most unassuming modern baitcast reel out there. At first glance, it looks like any other mid-range baitcast reel you’d find on store shelves, blending right in with the crowd. But beneath that familiar exterior lies something truly different—a mechanical braking system unlike anything else on the market, and easily the most unique I’ve ever seen in a baitcast reel.

You may have seen the Draken 1 or is larger brother the Genesis One on social media making waves for its unique anti backlash capabilities. Unlike most modern reels loaded with casting options and brake controls, Svivlos keep it simple. Press the thumb bar and cast away—no thumbing the spool or fiddling with control knobs required. The benefit of this reel for the everyday angler is that it reduces the frustrations often caused by a baitcast reel’s main enemy: backlash.

Modern reels typically utilize mechanical or magnetic braking at the start of the cast, assisting the thumb in controlling the line throughout. The distinctive feature of the Svivlo reel is that this braking occurs as the spool decelerates.

It’s an odd feeling to remove your thumb and fully place trust in the braking system. But I can attest this reel delivers a fairly backlash free experience for many users.

Can you backlash the reel? Short answer: yes. It’s not impossible, but if you’re genuinely casting and actively fishing—not intentionally trying to create a backlash—most anglers will find it pretty tough to make it happen.

With its braking system relying on the lure pulling the line, this reel feels perfectly suited for most moderate to heavyweight baitcasting lures and techniques. I’m not certain about its lower limit, as I’d probably choose a different setup for true finesse casting.

Over the past year, I put the reel through its paces in all kinds of conditions and with a mix of fishing partners and family members. Everyone quickly got the hang of it and enjoyed fishing with different lures, much like the plug-and-play ease of a Zebco spincast reel. There’s a certain swagger it brings when everyone else around the pond is using spincast or spinning reels. Even better, it gives novice anglers the chance to try techniques that really shine with a baitcast reel.

Perhaps the biggest issue I have with the reel is I am not the target market end user. I found myself wanting to “adjust” nuances with it for various techniques and found that distance compared to some of my high end reels was compromised.

Nonetheless, this reel is a blast to fish with, both for me and anyone I’ve introduced it to. I’ve had a great time showing it off and chatting about it with fellow anglers. The price is fair for what it offers, but I can’t help thinking it would be a huge hit with its target market if the technology could be brought into a more affordable price range, making it accessible to more people. At an MSRP of $250 USD, it faces plenty of competition from mainstream OEMs that many seasoned anglers might find more appealing.

The Svivlo Draken 1 is a great reel for beginners, offering reliable technology that lets anglers focus on fishing while reducing the usual baitcasting frustrations. The main downside is its semi steep price, which can be tough for its intended audience. For advanced users, it’s an enjoyable reel but may feel a bit limited in what it can do.

In short, the Svivlo Draken 1 is the reel I wish I’d had when I first learned to use a bait caster. It’s the kind of reel that lets you hit the water and just fish without overthinking it.
