There are rumors circulating on multiple fishing forums buzzing with speculation about Shimano’s current Chronarch B and 50MG bait cast reels getting a redesign for 2009. The current Chronarchs have been on the market for a few years now and with the market trending toward cheaper, lighter, and faster reels, there’s little reason to doubt all the speculation. The Chronarch 50MG has been a hit with many anglers, including myself, with its lightweight, saltwater safe, palm-able frame. Whereas, the Chronarch B is a sleek reel that has built upon the history of its predecessors. However, stiff competition in the mid $200 price category like the Daiwa Zillion, and Abu Garcia Revo Premier, makes keeping this line up to date a priority for Shimano.
Of course, one of the biggest signs of a reel on its way out are drastic price drops by retailers once the manufacturer lifts M.S.R.P. restrictions. Currently Tacklewarehouse and Outdoorproshop have dropped their prices on both these reels. If the rumors are true expect other etailers like Cabelas to follow suit. Regardless, of what happens to the Chronarch lineup its hard to complain as there’s nothing quite like getting a deal on a great reel.
